Homemade Christmas cookies for beginners…

Let’s start with saying that I am not a baker, in fact, this was my first crack at making homemade Christmas cookies. I wanted to start traditions with my kids that we will look forward to each year so I gave this a go and I definitely think that we will keep this tradition going in the years to come! My son is a little young but my daughter helped me quite a bit, she also made a huge mess and ate a lot of our hard work while at it, but hey, that’s what it’s all about!

We made everything from scratch including the frosting and they are honestly the best Christmas cookies I have had. If you are a beginner like me, you can do it too! Because I am new to this I wasn’t very prepared for frosting the cookies properly so I had to think on my feet as we didn’t have decorating bags on hand. I had to turn to what we had in the pantry and ended up using a ZIPLOC bag and it worked really well! All I did was put the frosting into the bag and cut the bottom corner—very easy to do!

This is the recipe I used: Christmas Cookie Recipe

I kinda went my own way with the frosting but it was extremely easy and super delicious. This is what I did:

  • 2 cups confectioners sugar (start with this and you can always make more if needed)

  • Start with 1 teaspoon of water and add more to make it the consistency you desire

  • 1 tablespoon of Almond Extract (optional* but this made the flavors pop and completely made the cookie come together in my opinion)

Tip for frosting: don’t outline right on the edge of the cookie, because the frosting settles in and will most likely end up running off the side so try to outline a smidge closer to the center to allot for that.

Here is the food coloring I used. Place some of the frosting into either separate bowls or its own ziploc/ decorating bag then add food coloring to desired color.

I used a family friends recipe for the Italian Chocolate balls, because it’s someones personal recipe, it’s not mine to share so here is one that got great ratings and has similar ingredients: Italian Chocolate Balls I used the frosting I listed above on both the Italian chocolate balls and the Christmas Cookies.
